Day 3 Jan 19
Today we headed into the desert. There are 600 to 700 different plant species in Baja. Over 400 are endemic to Baja. We were introduced to several different cacti. We were warned about one that requires needle nose pliers to pull out the spines. One of the travelers tripped and fell on one. She had two layers on and still some of the spines got through. We saw one of the largest cacti species. It’s called cardon. It can easily be confused with the saguaro cactus found in Arizona but so much larger. We stopped right before lunch to see cave paintings that maybe are 3500 years old. We have gone through boulder fields and then flat lands where you think you are seeing broken off trees. But it is cacti of all different varieties. And it seems there are always mountains in the distance.
