Day 5 Jan 21

San Ignacio and today we boarded vans for a 90 minute drive to the lagoon.  This is the place they told us we may have to wade out and/or in to the boats.  It was high tide when we got there and the captain said he thought by the time we came back we may need to walk 30 ft.  Leanne said she could do that so she came along!  This lagoon is where the mothers tend to have their calves and where they mate.  It was warm enough that I wore crop pants but had my sun shirt and windbreaker on.  That was perfect.  We had some very close encounters with a mother and her calf.  These were friendly encounters.  You can tell the newer calves because they do not have many barnacles on them. Both the mother and baby swam close to the boats.  The captain tries to align the boat near a whale but then we wait to see if the mother comes to the boat.  It is always the whales choice we nether they approach a boat.

We saw dolphins first and the whales!

We sang songs and when we sang yellow submarine, both baby and mother came by our boat.  Some in our boat got to touch them. Leanne and I were not in the right place to do that.  I did get a good picture of eye spying.  This is when they stick their face out of the water.  Pictures are slowly uploading.  I’m hoping we have better internet tonight so they upload.

When we returned, the tide was still high so no wading!  I’m so glad Leanne got to do this one.

Then back to San Ignacio and we walked around the plaza.  There is the old mission church and our guide knew some things about it.  We then had a demonstration of how to make tortillas.  We each tried to make one.  We were actually full after eating them so we opted to walk back to the lodge.

Tomorrow we go back to Guerrero Negro for our final trip to see whales.
